Barangay officials undergo crime prevention seminar

A CRIME prevention training seminar for the city’s barangay officials was held at the city museum on October 22 to improve maintenance of peace and order through collaborative efforts, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), in cooperation with the city government and Philippine National Police (PNP) – Regional Office 1.
Attended by barangay captains, chief tanods, chairmen on peace and order and representatives of Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), the “Barangay at Pulisya Laban sa Krimen” (BPLK) program shared efforts and responsibility between the local government, security agencies and the people in establishing peace and order in their communities.
The program discussed overview and concepts of criminality, the relationship between crime prevention and community safety, and the roles of the police and the community in crime prevention.
The concept and benefits of neighborhood watch as a nationwide crime prevention initiative in communities were also introduced to the participants to empower communities in taking an active role in the development of peace and order.
All these were discussed by PSI Jordan Tomas of PNP – ROI and Ilocos Sur Cluster Leader Rogelio Quitola of DILG in order to stress the role of the police and the community in crime prevention.
The attendees also formulated their respective action plans as part of their implementation of the BPLK program. The action plan included activities that will be implemented under the peace and order plans in their respective barangays.
Dagupan City served as the pilot area in the entire region for the launching of the BPLK program, Pangasinan Cluster II Leader Roger Daquioag of DILG said in his message.
“You were selected by the regional office because you are very skilled and committed in your responsibilities as barangay officials.” added Daquioag.
DILG City Director Melinda Buada added that the city’s active stand on anti-criminality and peace and order were also factors why the city was selected as a pilot area over other localities in the region.
Buada also disclosed the importance of empowering barangay officials in maintaining the peace and order in their respective barangays.
“We need to enhance (and empower) our barangay officials because they serve as front liners in their areas. Sila agad yung mga pinupuntahan ng mga tao kung may mga problema sa barangay. They are very essential in keeping peace and order in their areas,” added Buada. (Verdelle De Vera/CIO)
